SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 Cumulative Update 5 is available for download with a request to CSS!

From the series of the SQL Server 2005 Service Pack2 Cumulative Update packages blogs and for instance we blogged about SQL2005SP2CU5 earlier, it is available to download now and before that there is a catch to obtain this package.

It is not that easy to download files from the Microsoft download site, you have to submit a Online Customer Service request to obtain the package, go to ThisLInk and submit further details. Before that a brief advice on going towards upgrading your SQL 2005 SP2 instances follow:

A supported cumulative update package is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problems that are described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing these specific problems. This cumulative update package may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by any of these problems, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2005 service pack that contains the hotfixes in this cumulative update package.

The article referred on above notes is KBA943656 link.

The basic idea about advice is if any issue with this cumulative update on your instances then you have to create an additional service ticket to resolve, to avoid all these issue it is better to test this update package thoroughly on your Development (like-to-like production) enviornment. As there are costs involved on additonal service requests for the issues you get and issues that do not qualify for this specific cumulative update package. For further information on creating a seperate service requests on the problems within SQL Server 2005 platform visit ThisSupport page.
